Mindful Nachos

I CANNOT live my life like I eat nachos. They are one of my favorite foods, and I should enjoy EVERY bite. Instead, I’m always looking ahead: “Look over there, that one has the most cheese potential.” I don’t fully chew a bite before plotting my next one.

Further confession: it’s worse when I share nachos. Certainly in “real life” I want others to enjoy the good stuff too. But I’m selfish with this particular tex-mex meal. I want to pay attention to “my favorites” in life, and not be too focused on the “the next” and miss the present. Therefore, I write this corn chip confession in a need of accountability. I’m sure this has trickled into other aspects of my life.

I rob myself of that moment of conversation and let the “getting ahead of myself” steal the moment.

Daily, I love my job. I get to travel and work to encourage literacy, reading and library use statewide. But I can be in the middle of an incredible conversation with an author and think, “when is it my turn? When will I be a published author?” I rob myself of that moment of conversation and let the “getting ahead of myself” steal the moment. That’s just an example. Unfortunately, I have others. I pride myself on being present and appreciative, but the “next bite” can threaten the incredible now; i.e. 2017 goals can snag December’s sweetness.

After all, it takes brain power and strength to savor the immediate. Brave Tutu’s mission is “to take courage in delight and discover power in small moments.” The global “what’s next?” thoughts love to show up uninvited. Recently, I attended a talk about mindfulness. The speaker explained, “we are wired to worry” and the innate need to look to the “next” has kept humans alive for years. However, there is absolute value in intentional appreciation of today, this very second. Where is the balance?

I know, I know, it’s nacho problem. (I had to). But feel free to chip in. What are the things you enjoy—like a lot—but it’s almost like you can’t appreciate them in the moment? Especially during this busy holiday season, how do you slow down and chews enjoyment?
